The second Sprint Cup-Rothoblaas Trophy goes to Polish Pola Wojcik: the 44th Garda Optimist Meeting begins on Wednesday
There couldn’t have been a better way to kick off the week of the 44th Garda Optimist Meeting: the second edition of the Sprint Cup-Rothoblaas Trophy enlivened the weekend just ended, attracting nearly one hundred sailors, about twenty more than last year.
The weather conditions were excellent, with a relentless Peler blowing in double digits for most of the afternoon on the race course sheltered by Monte Brione. The Race Officials, coordinated by PRO Raffaele Valsecchi and International Umpire Luigi Bertini, and the Fraglia Vela Riva team on the water, led by Fausto Maroni, did an excellent job.
The winner, after seven races featuring a unique knockout format, was Poland’s Pola Wojcik (POL-3551). Before the eyes of her father and coach Hubert, the first to celebrate, she reached the final, finishing all the selection races in the top group, thus taking no risks. At the decisive moment, she produced a decisive change of pace, allowing her to dominate the decisive race from start to finish, aided by a great pin start.
Completing the regatta podium were Greece’s Madeleine Gambade and Italy’s Roman Vyevyenko, representing the organizing club.
The awards ceremony was well attended, with Robert Blaas, along with Fraglia Vela Riva president Andrea Camin, presenting the event’s iconic trophy to winner Pola Wojcik.
As mentioned, the Sprint Cup-Rothoblaas Trophy kicked off the official program of the 44th Garda Optimist Meeting, which opens on Thursday, while Wednesday will see the 12th Country Cup, which will feature one sailor from each nation participating in the event (currently about forty-five). The Meeting will conclude on Easter Sunday and has surpassed one thousand registered participants.
