SPLASH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - FLASH EUROCUP CHAMPIONSHIP - 12.19/08/2006
Trentino’s section of Lake Garda will host the Splash class’ World Championship and the Flash class’ European Cup until tomorrow, Saturday 19th August. The finals of both events began today. In the World Championship, the skippers have been split into three groups: Gold, Silver and Bronze Fleet. The groups are composed of sixty contestants, and everyone is hunting for a spot on the podium. As for the three Italians, Riccardo Camin will take part in the Silver Fleet, while Giulia Angolini and Giacomo Grosselli in the Bronze. In the Flash class, Remco Hoeffnagel snatched second place from fellow-countryman Vogel, by only one point, 21 against 22.
Riva del Garda, Friday 18th August 2006 – The rest-day granted in the competition’s schedule yesterday, has been the only day without wind. After the break, the activity in the water of the 248 participants to the Splash class’ World Championship and the Flash class’ European Cup started again today in Riva del Garda. As for the Splash class’ World Championship, last Tuesday (after the six qualifying races), the international judges had split the 184 competing skippers into three groups, Gold (62), Silver (61) and Bronze (61). The three Italian helmsmen have unfortunately been excluded from the Gold Fleet group, which offers places on the podium in the World Championship’s finals. Their limited competing experience left no real final victory expectation to the “Azzurri” contestants, all enrolled with Fraglia Vela Riva. Nevertheless, this event certainly gave them more experience in advance of other craft competitions to come.
Sun, heat and “Ora” were available in consistent quantity when, today (at approximately midday), the Regatta’s Committee summoned the contestants to the water, where they confronted each other in two exciting races. The “Ora”, Garda’s southerly wind, represents competitive sail’s prime engine, and today its strength has reportedly been between six and eight metres per second (that is between 21 and 29 Km/h). The wind brought the crafts’ shrouds tinkling to the harbour, and made several craft capsize to the water. Still, the outcome of the race day was positive, also due to the competent organisation provided by Fraglia.
This is the interim ranking of the SPLASH class’ World Championship (after 8 races, one discard):
GOLD FLEET - 1. Tuke Blair (NZL - 1.1.2.1.1.1.1.1), 2. Jochem-Bart Haakaman (NED - 3.1.1.1.1.2.3.2), 3. Andy Maloney (NZL - 1.1.4.1.1.3.2.3);

SPLASH WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - FLASH EUROCUP CHAMPIONSHIP - 12.19/08/2006
