After two regattas in the Splash class, two skippers from New Zealand, (Tuke Blair and Andy Maloney) are currently sharing first place on the interim ladder of the World Championship, having won their respective preliminary rounds. Dutchman Juri Vogel is on top of the ladder of the Splash class’ European Cup. Giacomo Grosselli (of Fraglia Vela Riva) is the best placed Italian in the Splash Class, holding the 108th position. Riva del Garda, Monday 14th August 2006 – Today the sky over the Trentino’s section of Lake Garda was partially leaden. Nevertheless, that did not prevent the first race-day from taking place at the Splash class’ World Championship and Flash class’ European Cup. At 4:10pm the last of the crafts reached the finish line, whilst the ones which arrived first were safely harboured, as it still threatened to rain. However, the “threat” of rain remained as such, since the wind had enough strength to blow away the menacing clouds further north. The “Ora” had been blowing intensely throughout both races (10 m/s – approximately 35 Km/h). Giulia Angolini, from Bergamo (Italy), is enrolled with Fraglia Vela Riva. She took part in the Splash class’ race for the first time, which she decided to attempt to compete in after leaving the Optimist class (as opposed to the fast 29ER class). “At the end of the first race I had a really good result (36th overall position), despite a strong “Ora” which troubled me in keeping the craft steady. Later, just as the second race was about to start, the wind got even stronger. That capsized my boat. I kept floundering in the water until I managed to climb on the drift. I got my boat back straight and tried to check where the other contestants were. The Race Committee had given the start signal four minutes earlier. I entered the racing field anyway, finishing the second race with no real ambition. I did not even qualify”. Riccardo Camin, from Riva del Garda (Italy), another enrolled with Fraglia Vela Riva, took also part in the competition. He was disadvantaged by the clash with a dutch skipper while having his lunch during the break between the first and the second race. Some of the boom’s sheets remained broken and the sail ripped. He legitimately protested with the Jury, as he could not take part in the second race. Giacomo Grosselli, the third local contestant, now occupies the 108th overall position, and is the first Italian on the ladder. On the other hand, Tommaso Tortarolo, of Genoa’s Italian Yacht Club, forfeited the race at the last moment. The following contestants are currently leading the Splash class’ World Championship: 1. Due skipper neozelandesi, Tuke Blair e Andy Maloney, sono al comando aex equo della classifica provvisoria del mondiale dopo due regate nella classe Splash per aver dominato le rispettive batterie. L’olandese Juri Vogel, invece, comanda la Eurocup della classe Flash. Giacomo Grosselli (FV Riva) al 108° generale Splash è il primo italiano in classifica. Riva del Garda, lunedì 14 agosto 2006 - Il lago di Garda trentino, oggi, è apparso sotto un cielo parzialmente plumbeo che non ha impedito, tuttavia, la disputa della prima giornata di regate del mondiale della classe Splash e la Eurocup della classe Flash. Alle 16.10 l’ultima imbarcazione in gara tagliava il traguardo mentre i primi erano già al sicuro in porto col cielo che minacciava ancora acqua. Le “minacce” però sono rimaste tali perché l’Ora, che ha soffiato intensa per tutto il tempo delle due prove (10 metri/secondo - ca. 35 Km/h), aveva forza sufficiente ancora per spingere e allontanare verso nord le nubi minacciose. In regata, per la prima volta con lo Splash, la bergamasca Giulia Angolini, tesserata per la Fraglia Vela Riva, che dopo l’Optimist in alternativa ai veloci 29ER ha deciso di provare questa deriva: “Ho chiuso bene la prima regata (36° assoluta) nonostante la forte Ora mi avesse dato qualche problema di tenuta. Poi, mentre stavamo per partire nella seconda, il vento è rinforzato facendomi scuffiare. Continuavo a rotolare in acqua finché non sono riuscita a salire sulla deriva, raddrizzare la barca e provare a guardare dove erano gli altri. Il Comitato aveva dato la partenza da quattro minuti, mi sono portata sul campo di regata e ho concluso senza alcuna velleità anche la seconda prova senza classificarmi”. In gara anche Riccardo Camin, altro fragliotto rivano, penalizzato da uno scontro di uno skipper olandese mentre, nella pausa tra la prima e la seconda prova, stava mangiando. Per lui rottura di alcune scotte del boma e strappo nella vela con protesta più che giustificata alla Giuria per non aver potuto partire nella seconda prova. Il terzo skipper di casa Giacomo Grosselli si piazza al 108° posto generale, primo degli azzurri. Ha dato forfait all’ultimo minuto, invece, Tommaso Tortarolo dello Yacht Club Italiano di Genova.
