Eurolymp day 4: sunday medal race
Tomorrow is the closing day of Olympic Garda Eurolymp 2011 It was a beautiful sunny and windy day on Upper Lake Garda despite the bad weather forecast. All races were completed according to schedule (only the Finn has 9 out of 10 races completed). Wind conditions were favourable so everyone could sail their best. The land and water staff involved in the logistical operation is, as always, outstanding. Fraglia Vela Riva, Torbole Surf Club and Fraglia Vela Malcesine all worked together to ensure that the participants raced in the best conditions. This is the final event for the Italians to qualify for London 2012, even if they have to take part in the ISAF World Championships in Perth (first ten countries). Only the Laser Standard and Finn will be decided for Olympic qualification tomorrow morning in the final. It’s a hotly contested final race which will decide who will qualify for the Olympics between the Italian men’s’ singles. The event finished in favor of Olympiad Sensini after an exciting dual for qualification with Laura Linares who, although remains defeated, has the satisfaction of having challenged a legend who is about to take part in her 6th Olympics.

There were good steady winds for today’s two races bringing to a total of ten legs before the medal race. In the women’s competition the dual between Olympiad Alessandra Sensini and Junior World Multi-Champion Laura Linares, came to a close. Sensini had never found herself with such strong competition. Then along came Laura Linares, who knew how to continue her outstanding career from the top of the world Juvenile classification in the Olympic class RS: X. The first race was won by Chen of China and second was Alessandra Sensini, who got the advantage on Linares, who finished fourth. Only then did we see Sensini smile! But Linares hadn’t given up and in the second round took second place right behind Lee of China; the choice of the bowline edge was decisive and gave a sizeable advantage over their rivals. Sensini took fifth place, which was at the end discarded and qualified for the medal race with enough margin to qualify with 24 points advantage, even before the medal race.
