Sailors from 34 countries; 302 boats-in-water; 446 pre-registered competitors. The numbers speak for themselves, one day before the big event, organized by the Fraglia Vela Riva and the Fraglia Vela Malcesine. Regattas begin tomorrow, Tuesday, May 5th, with the first warning signal at 1 pm. The grand finale and awards ceremony are scheduled for Saturday, May 9th. Top names, techniques honed razor-sharp from recent international battlewaters, appear in each class. Still fresh from their 5th place victory at Beijing 2008, Giulia Conti and Giovanna Micol are surefire crowd pleasers in the Women's 470 Class. In the Men's 470 Class, all eyes are on Gabrio Zandona', Silver Medalist of the Semaine Olympique Francaise, which just wrapped April 24th in Hye'res. Strong, homegrown cheering section guaranteed for the Fraglia's Fabio Zeni and for Nicola Pitanti. Other competitors at the center of our radar: Andrea Airo' and Nicolaos Mascoli (C.V.Bari); Francesco Bertagna and Marco Giannini (LNI Genova);Paolo Cian and Andrea Trani (S.V. Guarda di Finanza); Niccolo' and Francesco Bianchi (C.N.Pesaro); as well as Lake Garda's own Luca and Roberto Dubbini. In the Laser Standard Class, we find the Bronze Medalist from Hye'res, Matias Del Solar Goldsmith; in the Laser Radial Class, the competitor Francesca Clapcich stands out from the crowd. Rancing in the Finn Class, the Fraglia's own Riccardo Cordovani, but also Edward Wright and Giles Scott: respectively 2nd and 4th place winners at the Semaine Olympique Francaise in Hye'res. Quite a few 49er earlybirds have come to Riva as well: 46 to be exact. Perfect opportunity to "test the waters" for the upcoming 49er World Championship Regatta, scheduled for July 12th - 19th, and organized by the Fraglia Vela Riva. Huge numbers of athletes from all of Europe's national sailing teams. All eyes on Pietro and Gianfranco Sibello (ITA 4), Nico Delle Karth and Nicolaus Resch (AUT 10), Federico and Arturo Alonso (ESP 19), Manu Dien and Stefane Christidis (FRA 14), Chris Draper and Peter Greenhalgh (GBR 1097), and on Morgan Lagraviere and Yann Rocherieux (FRA 20): true protagonists of the Semaine Olympique Francaise, with the Sibellos as Gold Medal Champions. In the Star Class, top competitors John Gimson and Ed Greig (GBR 8025), and Andrei Berezhnoy and Sergey Sergey Masalov (RUS 8359). Finally, the RS-X: outstanding athletes include Laura Linares (ITA 11) and Flavia Tartaglini (ITA 46); also Federico Esposito (ITA 9). Cheering sections ready for another two Fraglia sailors: Emma Giuliari and Bettina Bonelli, competing in the Laser Radial.
