DAY 4 – 420 & 470 Junior European Championships

Date
Fri, 11/08/2017

The Italian are in the spotlight in 420 Open and Under 17. In 470 neck to neck between the Italian Ferrari-Calabrò and the French Machetti-Dantés for first place.

Both classes have started the finals in Riva del Garda at the 420 & 470 Junior European Championships. 470 sailed three races today (one in the morning and two in the afternoon), while 420 had two races as scheduled, which took place with the wind blowing from south in the afternoon.

One more wake up at dawn for all International Jury members, Race Committee, buoy team, and organizing staff of Fraglia Vela Riva  on day 2 with the start of regatta set at 8:00, hoping for the usual wind from north that blows towards Garda Trentino. Today it was the turn of the 470 to wake up early, but the wind was not so strong as Thursday: it was possible to sail only one race with light wind from north. Despite the changeable weather, at 12:00 the wind started to blow from south (l’Ora) that allowed to continue the races for the 470 class and to start the two finals of the 420 class. As it was on the previous days, the 420 course (in the north) benefitted from stronger wind, that reached also 15 knots and allowed to sail the always thrilling races, that today were even more exciting, since the fleet was divided into gold (top 55), silver, and under 17.
470 Men

The Championship is still open to the top 3: the French Machetti-Dantés are leading the way by only one point, thanks to their great today’s performances (one outstanding victory in the morning, 1-2 in the afternoon). The Italian Giacomo Ferrari and Giulio Calabrò (Marina Militare) with 6-2-1 seem to be the sole to tackle the French, since the English Hazeldine-Orr are third with a 19-point gap.

470 Female

The Greek Bozi-Klonaridou (6-7-1) climb the chart from 4th to 1st place tie with the Turkish Kaynakci-Aslan (9-6-8). Great upswing for the French Lefort-Granier from 8th to 3rd place with a 4-point gap. Marchesini-Fedel (SVB Grignano) are the first Italian (7th), followed by their club mates Russo Cirillo-Linussi only two ranks away, who gained a second place today.

 420 Open
The Spanish Balaguer-Massanet are still leading the way with a notable lead, despite their bad day (14-16). The American Ascencios-Chisari are second, but among the European the Italian Ferraro-Orlando (YC Sanremo) gained 3rd place overall (2nd among European), winning the last race of the day. Still good performances for the Italian Romeo-Tamburini (Circolo velico 3V) in great shape: with 2-2 gain 4th place overall, 3rd among Europeans.

420 Under 17

The European Champions Sposato (CV Crotone)-Centrone (CV 3V) are exploiting their knowledge of the race course, gained during the many training sessions with the Optimist team and their participations in the Optimist Lake Garda Meeting (organized every Easter by Fraglia Vela Riva): they still top the chart with 4-8 leaving the Greek Spanaki-Papadopolou 19 points behind, who are first among women. The Fraglia’s helmsman Tommaso Salvetta and his bowman Giovanni Sandrini (SC Garda Salò) reacted well after the yesterday’s unexpected disqualification: they managed to climb the chart to 4th place (3rd men) only 4 points from top 3. However, the young Italian of the 420 class are very competitive: Cilli-Mantero (YC Sanremo-CN Costaguta) are 5th overall. Carlotta and Camilla Scodnik (YCItaliano) are first among women (11th overall, 3rd among Europeans)

Tomorrow’s programme mirrors the same schedule of today with the start set at 8:00 for 470 and at 13:00 for 420. It will surely be a thrilling day with the Italian in the 420 class seem to be able to conquer great victories, as well as for the men’s Olympic 470, with the results reached by the young team Ferrari-Calabrò.
