420 and 470 European Championships: the fresh and young sailing in Riva del Garda

Sun, 06/08/2017

From Monday to Sunday Fraglia Vela Riva welcomes once again the two most competitive youth sailing doubles classes, in occasion of the 420 and 470 European Championships.

250 total teams will sail on the waters of Lake Garda (16 years old on average) will compete on the double Olympic boat. While for individual sailing Optimist and Laser are the two most popular classes, the classic doubles teams start on 420 and further develop their skills on 470. International teams are also participating at the Championships, like Brazil, USA, Uruguay, Argentina and Canada. The most hardened class is the 420, in which the Italian Demetrio Sposato and Gabriele Centrone are sailing in the under 17 category after winning the Senior European title. With them also the Fraglia’s Tommaso Salvetta with Giovanni Sandrini as bowman, who will do their best to improve their 12th place achieved at the Senior European Championships ten days ago in Greece. Ferraro-Orlando who won the silver in Greece, will also be sailing in Riva del Garda. The American crew is among the most competitive international teams. Among the male 470 teams the Italian Ferrari-Calabrò are also present, after their brilliant 6th place at the recent World Championships in Salonicco. Many participants from France, Germany, Great Britain, besides Italy. The check of the entries, gross tonnage, sails, and riggs started on Sunday in the Palavela: the extremely comfortable building offered by Riva del Garda Fiere e Congressi, ideal to host events of this kind, as it was for the Lake Garda Optimist Meeting at Easter. The “practice race” is scheduled on Monday: a thrilling general race not only for the athletes, but also for the organizing crew on water. Race committee, the buoy team, international jury, secretary office, the Fraglia’s and international ranking committees will strongly collaborate to prepare the organization of the event at its best. The qualifying regattas will start on Monday in the afternoon, hoping that the weather will be good during the whole week, after the 60-knot storm of Sunday morning.

The event can be followed both on the Fraglia vela Riva social networks and on the 420/470 platform and app.
