Day 2 Meeting del Garda Optimist

Date
Fri, 25/03/2016

An Italo-American head to head in the cadets: full house for Cesana of Fraglia Vela Riva who leads with 4 firsts. Fellow team-mate of Fraglia Vela Riva Agata Scalmazzi climbs into 5th place overall and is the first of the girls.
Norwegian Berthet leads in the juniors with Muller and Mohr of Germany right behind. Filippo Varini, the first Italian, is fifth followed by Matteo Bedoni of Fraglia Vela Riva.

The weather today wasn't as good as it was yesterday with some cloud coverage over Lake Garda, Trentino, however there was no shortage of wind for the 900 youngsters who were involved in another intense day of racing. There's stiff competition in both categories for a place on the podium. Two races will be held tomorrow and on Sunday the junior fleet will be split into gold, silver, bronze, emerald and pearl with the top competitors together in the gold fleet.

Cadets
A very determined Mattia Cesana of organising club Fraglia Vela Riva, holds on to the lead after fending off his American friend Ben Foox (2-2-1-11 discarded). A few days ago there was a twinning of the American team and the Optimist team of Fraglia-Vela-Riva. Only one point behind them is Erik Norlèn of Sweden, tying on points with Scheckendiek of Germany, (2-10-2-2). A great effort today from Agata Scalmazzi (Fraglia-Vela-Riva), who with a third and an eighth today climbs into fifth place and is first among the girls. The other Italian Giorgia Bonalana, (CV Torbole) is ninth and third in the girls.

Juniors ( standings after 5 races of 6)
While the standings are being processed after the sixth race ( the third of today), the situation in the junior category is much more balanced with helmsmen representing 8 different countries in the top ten. Leading after very precise and regular regattas is Mathias Berthet of Norway (3-2-2-6-1), followed by two Germans with only one point separating them. Muller and Mohr are certainly defending their flag. The standings, however is very short with Kosmalski of Poland is in fourth place tying on points with third. He is followed by the first Italian Filippo Varini (RYC Savoia), who came first in regatta 4 and is equal on points with Matteo Bedoni of Fraglia-Vela-Riva, sixth overall. We predict a fierce battle not only for first place but for the whole podium. The first girl is Liksanova of Russia while the first Italian girl is Giulia Sepe of Rome. After 5  races she finishes in sixteenth place overall. This category is also very well balanced and it is practically impossible to predict how the competition will turn out.
The award ceremony for the Country Cup took place this evening with Denmark winning for the second time and a prize drawing for all the participants with a D jay entertaining. A party within a party which is an important moment of getting together for these young sailors, one of the distinctive qualities of the Garda Optimist Meeting.
