The world class Topper arrives at Fraglia Vela Riva with a “British invasion” at Riva del Garda

Fri, 17/07/2015

The very young, and in particular British youngsters take centre stage at Fraglia Vela Riva on Lake Garda, Trentino as the World Topper Championships get under way. The event kicks off with the opening ceremony on Sunday, July 19th at 18.30 and wraps up on Friday, 24th July. The World Championship event, organised by Fraglia Vela Riva in collaboration with ITCA International Topper Class Association, follows last year's event which was held at the Pwllheli Sailing Club in Great Britain the same club which recently hosted The European Optimist Championships in which two athletes from Fraglia Vela Riva, Tommaso Salvetta and Giorgia Cingolani, took part. Fraglia Vela Riva wishes them all the very best as they compete on Sunday in their first continental regatta. This is the first time Fraglia Vela Riva has hosted  a Topper World Championship although it can boast that the title went to one of its own at Malcesine in 2010. Michele Benamati hopes to repeat that success this year. The five Italians  representing Fraglia Vela Riva in the 4.2 category are Mattivi ( Riva del Garda), Santorum (Tenno), Bustaffa (Cavedine), Pallaver (Bolzano) and Moreschi ( Riva del Garda) with Francesca Ramazzotti representing Fraglia Vela Desenzano. In the older category Topper 5.2, we have Vittorio Gallinaro (Fraglia Vela Riva), who represented Italy in the last Youth Olympics and Patrik Zeni ( Fraglia Vela Malcesine). The Championships count towards the “Ladies Intercontinental Cup” and “The International Master Event”.

The two categories will race with sails measuring 4.2 and 5.3 sq.m depending on the age/weight of the helmsman ( born between 1998 and 2005), with the 5.3 being the larger fleet. Around 150 participants are taking part with more than half being British. Other countries represented are Ireland, France, South Africa, Italy and even surprisingly China.
“Two World Championships in mid-summer”- commented Fraglia Vela Riva President Giancarlo Mirandola on the eve of the event – from Sunday we will have the single Toppers which are extremely popular in the Anglo-Saxon countries, while at the end of July we will host the Cadet World Championships another juvenile event this time on a double- popular in Great Britain and Australia. As Lake Garda becomes more and more international it is always on the look-out for sailing classes that are less well known in Italy but highly popular in other countries where they enjoy a large following. This is a wonderful opportunity to expand our sailing culture and to acquaint those countries with strong sailing traditions to the wonders of Lake Garda, Trentino” -
concluded Mirandola

Racing starts on Monday at 12.00
