The Optimist, a small single-handed dinghy specially for children up to the age of 15 years, was the sailing boat used in accomplishing the record. Youngsters aged 9-14 years took part in the regatta with the largest representation , naturally being from Italy with 332 participants. Germany followed with 235 then Denmark with 69. Many came from as far away as Australia, Bermuda and the U.S. who had 22 participants.
